The Haunted Railroad Bridge
In rural Greeneville, TN, there is an old railroad bridge which is said to be home to some unresting souls. According to the stories, this bridge was the site of many atrocities committed over a century ago. In those days, there was little in the way of justice for slaves and later free African-Americans. If a black person was accused of a crime, a trial often didn't occur (and if it did, it was often a 'kangaroo court'). Sometimes mobs would form and distribute "justice" (actually no justice at all) in the form of a lynching.
A certain railroad bridge in Greeneville is said to have been a common place for lynchings. From here, countless African-Americans, many of whom were probably innocent, were hanged. Not surprisingly, their spirits are said to still haunt this bridge. Occasionally, there are sighting of apparitions, but mostly just splashes in the water and voices are heard. Perhaps this is the "spiritual remnants" of a dark time in our history.
