The Cumberland Mountains Ghost Lights
Many people have heard of the Chapel Hill Ghost Light, but not as many know of a similar phenomenon that occurs in the Cumberland Mountains. These lights generally follow the Obed River in and just outside of Crossville and have even been known to cross Interstate 40. They aren't as widely observed as the aforementioned Chapel Hill lights, but there are many people who have reported to have seen them.
The legend is that they are the sprits of two robbers and an old trapper whom they were robbing. According to the legend, the trapper lived alone. One night two robbers were passing through and saw his cabin. They planned to rob him and then kill him because they had heard he had a large amount of money stashed. They broke into his cabin and held a knife to his throat, demanding the money. He said he would get it if they released him. He then knocked the knife from one of the drifter's hands, and a scuffle ensued. During the scuffle, a This account was taken from Charles Edwin Price's Haunted Tennessee. I have driven through this area many times after dark, and have not seen any unusual lights, though I have heard people talk of them before, and even one person who saw strange lights in the area, though these were in the sky, not close to the ground. Even so, I keep my eyes peeled for them anytime I pass through after dark.
