Kennesaw Mountain Battlefield

The Battle of Kennesaw Mountain was part of Sherman's Atlanta campaign, and was fought from June 18, 1864, until July 2, 1864. General William T. Sherman led the Union forces, while General Johnston led the Confederate forces. As was usually the case, the Confederate forces were badly outnumbered, this time by a two-to-one margin. Despite this, the Confederacy won the skirmish. General Johnson is widely considered to be a genius, and he certainly showed it in this improbable victory.

Kennesaw Mountain Battlefield is known to boast its share of spooks, as does nearly every battlefield. Some visitors have claimed to see ghostly soldiers walking around the park grounds, and have heard distant gunshots. It's also claimed that ghostly deer will run at you, only to disappear as they get close to you. Sometimes, you can hear cannons firing late at night. The smell of blood and gunpowder are sometimes encountered.

All these stories have attracted many curious people to come and see these things for themselves. As a result, you can no longer drive to the top of the mountain. You must either ride a bus or walk up there yourself. Visiting the battlefield after dark is illegal. Still, the stories persist, and one wonders if there isn't some truth to some of them. Visiting battlefields often gives you strange feelings, and Kennesaw is no exception. Do ghosts roam the grounds? Perhaps. You decide.
