The Foggy Hugh Hamblen
Along Netherland Inn Road in Kingsport, there exists a most helpful apparition. The ghost of Hugh Hamblen can be seen on dark and foggy nights, warning motorists to slow down on the dangerous road.
The story of the ghost of Hugh Hamblen goes back to 1922 when Hugh's son, Charlie, was out with a group of friends. They boys were partying, and quite intoxicated. It was a foggy night when the driver lost control of the vehicle, and it slammed into the side of a bridge. There were six young men in the car, but only two would survive. Charlie was among the survivors, and his father Hugh was immediately summoned to Kingsport Hospital, which was then located behind the Netherland Inn. Hugh remained at the hospital with his son until the morning, as Charlie steadily improved. When it became apparent that Charlie was going to be okay, Hugh decided he might as well return home and get some rest. As Hugh crossed the street, he was hit by a car and killed. When Charlie heard the news of this, he blamed himself. Though he recovered from his injury, he became reclusive. He never recovered from the guilt. It wasn't long after this that people began to see the ghost of Hugh Hamblen, warning people to slow down. According to the hundreds who have claimed to have seen him, he appears from the fog and motions for them to slow down. Perhaps he wants no one else to have to suffer the same fate he did.
