First Presbyterian Church Cemetery

The cemetery of the First Presbyterian Church in downtown Knoxville is the oldest cemetery in Knoxville. The church was founded in 1792, and the cemetery is the final resting grounds of some of Knoxville's earliest pioneers, including William and Mary Blount, and James White. Or perhaps a better term would be apparently.

What many people believe, and what Charles Edwin Price pointed out as a rumor in his excellent book, Mysterious Knoxville is that, in fact, no one is buried beneath the gravestones! A look at the list of plots at the edge of the cemetery does verify that there are a few people buried here who are "missing" and also that some old headstones were discovered beaneath a wing of the church behind the cemetery. Did the church expand over part of the cemetery?

Even more intriguing than this is the mysterious figure which has been seen lurking around the cemetery at night. It's a classic example of a "black aggie", that is a force which haunts cemeteries. According to those who have seen it, the figure wears a hood and is very dark. In fact, you can see through it! No one knows exactly what it's origin is, though some speculate that perhaps it's the spirit from one of the "missing" graves, and it is searching for it's grave.

It's unclear what is going on here out of the ordinary, or if there even is anything out of the ordinary, but it's facinating none the less. I recomend visiting the cemetery during the day, especially if you have any interest in history. After dark, be careful. You might see something you will regret!
