The Ghost of Libertyland

When one thinks of haunted places, a modern amusement park is not a likely place to spring to mind. However, according to local legend, Libertyland Theme Park, located at 940 Early Maxwell Blvd. in Memphis, TN, is said to be haunted by the benevolent spirit of a long dead carousel operator.

Years ago, there was a kind hearted man who operated the carousel at Libertyland. He was genuinely kind and everyone who knew him was very fond of him. He also had a love for children, and did everything he could to help them enjoy their time at the amusement park. Perhaps he was too kind. One day, a child accidentally dropped a balloon into the carousel. The man, being the generous soul that he was, told the child he would go and retrieve the balloon for him. Unfortunately, the conductor forgot to turn off the carousel, and it started moving. Tragically he was killed, his head decapitated.

No doubt many people mourned his death, as he was one of the area's most beloved people. He was missed by almost everyone who ever met him. Strangely though, after he died, people began to encounter his spirit. The spirit is much the same as the man was in life: kind and gentle. He's rarely seen, but he has reportedly played a role in adverting other tragedies at the park, mostly by turning off equipment.

His spirit is said to walk Libertyland to this day, making his presence known occasionally. Few people have seen him though. Perhaps he doesn't want to scare people, and prefers to help people without them knowing it is him. Anyone who anonymously helps others obviously has his or her heart in the right place.

So if you are riding a roller coaster at Libertyland, don't be scared. There is a kind soul watching over you.
