The Lady of the Opera House
The Grand Opera House, located at 2206 Fifth Street in Meridian, MS, is a very historic site. It first opened on December 17, 1890, and soon became one of the greatest stages in the South. It was home to many plays, musicals, and operas. People came from all over the country to see the events held here. Among the greats who performed here were Norma Shearer, Sarah Bernhardt, and Helen Hayes. They all fell in love with the lovely theater, as did many guests. Perhaps it is one of those actresses of former guests who now haunts this famous house of the Old South.
Today, the theater is home to an enigmatic ghost known only as "The Lady." No one knows who she was in life, but some have speculated that she was a former stage great who wanted to return to the theater. A number of people have seen her, and it's said that she stand on the stage and sing. Many night maintenance people hear her voice echoing throughout the building. Perhaps someday, someone will discover her true identity. Until then, she will remain a mystery. Perhaps she likes it that way.
