Haunted Rugby

Rugby, TN is a quaint English town located partly in Morgan County, and partly in Scott County. It was built in 1880 to for second sons from England. It has been called "one of the most haunted towns in America."

The legend goes like this: On New Years Eve, 1897, a prominent man named Davis, and his young wife were holding a celebration there. Among those present were the most prominent members of Rugby society. It is believed that one of the young men present made some advances on Mrs. Davis, and Mrs. Davis obliged. Mr. Davis became very distraught. The next morning, the Davis' did not come to breakfast. An employee went to their room to check on them. They lived in room thirteen, which is fitting. When the employee opened the door, they found the bodies of Mr. and Mrs. Davis. Apparently Mr. Davis murdered his wife, and then shot himself in the head. In any event, both were dead. A few years later, the Inn burned down. Witnesses swore that room thirteen was the last to burn, and that screams were heard as it burned.

Another legend says that a ghost carriage still rides around at night. This is said to be the ghost of Brian Staggs. Staggs was only in his twenties when in died in the 1970s, but he had accomplished much in his short life. When he was a teenager, he had seen Rugby was falling apart from decay, so he decided to return it to it's former glory. He worked hard to do this, and without his heroic efforts, the historic site might have been lost for good.

I've heard there are many other stories of the area, but I don't know them well. As always, if you know of any more, contact me.
