Creepyness at Carnton Mansion

Location: Franklin, TN

Just thought I'd share this with you. I visited the Carnton Mansion in Franklin, Tennessee for the second time just a few weeks ago (on June 21st). I love Civil War History and wanted to share the experience of touring this mansion with my girlfriend (soon to be my fiance). While we were there, after our tour, I had to stop and share an experience with our tour guide that I had had the previous year when I had visited. Here's what took place:

I was standing in the upstairs bedroom with my arms down along side of my body (holding my camcorder in my right hand). The tour guide had just finished the tour of the room we were in and everyone was moving on to the next room. I stayed for a few more moments by myself to reflect on what the guide had just said and to take in the beauty of the room. All of the sudden out of nowhere something from behind pushed my right arm in an upward position. The push was intense as it moved my arm upward approximately 35 degrees. This happened in the bedroom upstairs where a piano is located. Now, the tour guide was not surprised to hear my account as he stated there have been numerous accounts of activity noted from that part of the house. Supposedly, this is where the lady of the house had gather the family to shelter them from the atrocities that were taking place throughout the rest of the house on that November night. It is said that she played the piano that night to try to drown out the screams of the injured. Also, there was a portrait of three children on the wall above a fireplace. If I'm correct in saying, two of them died at very young ages. I bring this up only because at first (when it happened) I though what I felt was a child pushing or trying to get past me. Now I know I didn't imagine this experience... It was all too real.

We didn't experience anything unusual this time, however, I was kind of hoping that we would. Maybe next time.

Danger at Dumpling Hill

Location: Paris, TN

Last night was one of the most horrifying nights of my life. One of my friend told me about this cemetery and told me some of her stories, well, everything she said was just to easy to pass off as coincidence, something running in the woods, rustling leaves, but then she told about her story about the time she heard the baby crying and the green glow following them around, well, I figured she was just messing around. I talked one of my friends into going and we set off in search of Dumpling Hill Cemetery. We passed the road going to it twice, but we finally found it. We all got out of the car, nothing was happening, then we heard what sounded like far off rolling thunder, but the thing is, the sky was so clear that you could count the stars. That wasn't enough to satisfy me, so I talked everyone into getting back out of the car. We decided to get anything good to happen we had to step inside the chain rope fence that was barely a foot off the ground and. We stood there a minute and nothing happened then Sam grabbed my arm and said, "tell me you heard that," and as soon as she said that, we heard a popping noise to our left, it sounded like fireworks, but it sounded like it was barely in the woods immediately to out left, everyone freaked out and we ran full speed to the car. We made it about to the end and we decided to come back. This time Sam wouldn't get out of the car for nothing, so me and Soy walked a little ways down the path to the right that went right beside the graves. This is when it started to get freaky, when all of a sudden, it sounded like stuff was falling out of trees, it started on the far side of the cemetery, and then again right in front of us, then it was two feet from us, so that was good enough for me and Soy, until we got back home, which is Huntingdon, TN, it's there somewhere, look a little south of Paris, so we got someone else to come with us and we drove about 30 min back to Dumpling. Having experienced what happened last time, I didn't want to even get out of the car, but I did and I stood right outside my door. It took several minutes, but I was the only one to experience something this time. I was trying to divert my eyes away from the cemetery and the woods and towards the road (since we backed in), but that wasn't going to help, about 5 minutes after I got out of the car, I heard something run beside me and I felt the wind it displaced on my back. I just froze, I yelled at Soy, who was inside the cemetery, to get back to the car, and he just slowly strolled back to the car. I yelled at him and left him there, the girl I was with was yelling and telling me that we left him, about 30 seconds after I left, I turned around in the road and sped back to get to him and needless to say when I saw him, he was running trying to catch up. He was really mad at me, but I had a just reason. Soy still wasn't satisfied, well, we went back and I just stayed in the car. Nothing really happened this time, Soy said he thought he saw something run across some graves, but it was probably a rabbit or something like that.

Volunteer Spirits

Location: Knoxville, TN

I was reading your information you had on ghosts at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. I was a student there in the early 90's and lived in Strong Hall for 2 years. I had some unexplained things happen to me like cups and glasses moving by an unseen hand. I was up late one night and was walking down the hall and saw something "float" by in front of me. But I was wide awake and it wasn't the only time I'd seen "Sophie." It is common knowledge when you live in Strong Hall that you WILL see Sophie before the year is up. I saw her a few times.

I was in summer school at UTK and stayed in Reese Hall. I had a close friend of mine who died in that dorm of alcohol poisoning. I'm not sure if he's an actual ghost there or not, but his death was sudden and very frightening to everyone. While I was a student there that summer, I had some other weird experiences.

Just thought I'd let you know. I work for the Georgia State Patrol now and the post where I work is supposedly haunted. It was written about in the Athens Georgia paper 2 years ago.

The Spirit of Robinhood Road

Location: Greeneville, TN

I suppose the first unusual occurrence with Ryan's house would have to have been around 3 years ago when we started noticing the unusual appearance and happenings around the house not to mention the pale young girl who seemed to occasionally be out in the yard playing with her little brown terrier dog! Yet it seemed she never would speak to us, though we found this to be very unusual we never really felt threatened by her she always seemed rather harmless. But to account the very first really unusual occurrence it would have to have been the days we started hanging out in her yard, the first time we ever got up the courage to do this it was May 29, 2001 my 13th birthday, it just so happened we later found out that Ryan was killed on her birthday (May 29) when she was to turn 13! Naturally this found fact intrigued us greatly and we found ourselves spending more time around the house playing researching and frankly just plain snooping!!!:) We were rather good at that! Anyway on that day as we were walking around the house the small terrier dog that we had seen so many times before walked up to us and began jump around playing as many dogs do, After a few minutes of this he began to act rather scared, tucking his tail and whimpering slightly.

Then all of the sudden out of no where a young woman who looked to be in her late 20's or early 30's appeared with long waist length hair and a very pale complexion, The young woman then looked at my friends and I and said that we needed to leave before we caused any more damage than we already had! Of course we were not at all slow to take the hint, in a matter of seconds we were off running as fast as we could go then as we turned to look back she was gone, as if she had just vanished! There was not enough time for her to have walked away or anything she was just gone! After a couple of weeks we finally choked up the courage to go back, though very frightened we entered the yard cautiously noticing every flower plant or bush that was different. We then noticed an unusual crooked bush that had seemed to have grown to its full size over these short weeks! We knew it had not been there before there was no way you could have missed it! Though we were a little freaked out by the sudden growth of this plant we walked up to the door and knocked for the first time to find out if there was in fact someone who lived there, much to our surprise there was no one! Just an empty house still furnished with everything that a house usually holds: lamps, couch and love seat, TV, and what looked to be an old time radio. We saw all this from a series of windows around the house. Though the house was very run down outside, on the inside it looked perfect except for a few toys laying around on the floor.

About this time we started to walk home because it was getting dark, it was then that we realized something that always seemed to happen when an unusual occurrence was about to happen, almost every time something weird had happened there was either around 20 or 30 rabbits across the street going nuts as if something were chasing them, or there were 2 black crows sitting on top of this house! So we immediately turned around and went back then as we looked inside once more everything was gone no furnishings or anything just an empty old house. A little Freaked out by this we turned around to leave noticing one more weird thing, the large bush that had appeared was gone nothing there but an empty spot where it was just a few minuets ago. These are just a few unusual things that have happened I will keep u updated and try to think of some other things that have happened in the house but right off the top of my head this is all for now.

The Lady of McCallie Avenue

Location: Chattanooga, TN

I've lived in Chattanooga my whole life and have heard a number of tales, and usually just laugh. I used to deliver the local newspaper at night. When I decided to quit, I was required to train my replacement on the route. There is a very old house on McCallie Avenue that seems to be frequently lived in and just as frequently abandoned. My replacement, "Allen," always acted nervous when we drove past. One night I commented on the lovely old building, and that it was a shame it stood empty so frequently. He got very quiet for a long time, and then asked me if I believed in ghosts. I told him I had no personal experience but did not disbelieve. He went on to recount the following story. He and his business partner had been hired to do renovations to this house, as this was his day job. They spent quite a bit of time in the old house. He said he was very excited at first because of the beauty of the structure, but after a little while he began to feel "sort of creepy." Near the end of the job, they had stayed late to complete painting in the upstairs area of the house. It was during the summer months, and was terribly muggy. They had opened the windows and had fans leaning there to both cool and dry the paint. He said he was very put out with his partner because he kept turning the fan off. He went in to find it unplugged, the tines on the cord bent like someone had yanked it out of the wall, only to find his partner was down stairs. He thought that was a little weird, but just plugged it back in and went back to work. A little later they decided to take a break. Here, he carefully interjected that they were not drunk or high. As they sat leaning against the walls in the upstairs hall eating sandwiches, a woman dressed in what he called a long, billowing, nightgown came from one room at the end, paused briefly to look in their direction, crossed the hall and went into an adjacent room. He said they both just froze, then he asked his partner, "Did you see that?" His partner replied, "Yeah, did you?" He said they collected their stuff as quickly as possible and never went back. He said, the people moved in, stayed a few months, and moved out. He didn't know why, but he could guess.

Swan Pond Spirits

Location: Harriman, TN

The best I can remember, we drove around the back of the church. There is a circle drive around it, or at least there used to be. We opened the back door because it was ajar and what I remember was a body hung from the rafters, dressed in what looked to be a black suit with a white bag over its head. Needless to say we got the hell out of there. At first I dismissed it as a prank because it was Halloween night the best I remember, but the rope was swinging, like it had just happened. I remember looking in the paper the next morning to see if anyone had killed themselves from Swan Pond. There was no trace of anyone else around (it is a small place).
