Old Brister Library
Old Brister Library is one of the oldest buildings on the University of Memphis campus, and is certainly the most haunted. No one knows for sure when the haunting began, but they were many years ago. The haunting has been going on for as long as anyone can remember.
The spirit which is said to roam about this building is not a happy one. Campus legend tells this story as the origin of the ghost: A number of years ago, a female student was brutally raped and then murdered late one night in the tower of the library. No one was around, so no one heard her screams. The man responsible was never captured. The ghost of the murdered girl now walks the grounds. The ghost is said to make herself known by screaming. Campus police have heard her screams, and rushed to investigate, only to find the building to be empty. She also appears to students and custodians, but will disappear into thin air when one tries to talk to her. It's quite unsettling for anyone working the night shift! Perhaps if the murder is ever caught, or the mystery is solved, the student will have some peace. We can only hope that will someday be the case.
