Watauga River Bridge
The Watauga Bridge, located in Elizabethton, TN, not far from the Stony Creek Community, was built in the 1920s. It immediately became a "lover's lane" type of locale for the youth of the neighborhood, who loved to hide under it for some privacy. In the 1930s, however, a tragedy struck.
Tom Jackson and Wanda Smithson had been seeing each other for a while when the visited the bridge during the 1930s. They found themselves all alone on this night, which made them happy. They spent a couple hours under the bridge, and then started to leave. As they did, they noticed a figure coming towards them. At first they thought it was just another couple coming to enjoy the solitude, but when it got closer, they noticed it was alone. Suddenly the huge man lunged at them, and stabbed Wanda in the chest. She was killed instantly. The man then turned to Tom, and stabbed him, but he was able to make a mad dash for the road. Just about that time, a car was driving across the bridge. Tom managed to open the back door and jump in. A woman sitting in the back seat screamed, and the driver stepped on the gas when he saw the homicidal maniac outside the car. Tom was rushed to a hospital, but he died later that night. He did manage to tell his story to the police.
Today, it is said if you drive across the bridge after dark, you will hear something trying to come into your car, or the back car door will open and close, and you will hear a thud in the back seat. There are also reports of a figure wearing a monk's robe and a hood which cover's his face, which is only a skull. Those who have seen it say it roams the area after dark, and is a spirit of pure evil. If you have your significant other with you and want some privacy, you would be wise to stay clear of the Watauga River Bridge. You never know what might be lurking in the shadows.
